Welcome to Issue 1 of Dirty Three Wines Newsletter, The Dirt! It has only taken us 3 years to get it going, but will become a quarterly issue, keeping you up to date with all things Dirty Three.

Sydney Wine Dinner

New release wines

We are super excited to release two new wines on to the market- our 2015 Dirty Three Riesling and 2014 Holgates Road Pinot Noir. The 2015 Riesling is similar in style to previous releases and has just received 93 points at the recent Gippsland Wine Show. Fortunately, we were able to secure some more South Gippsland Riesling fruit from our friends Dave and John Matthews at Utingi Vineyard, so this year we have a little bit more to go around. It won’t last long however, we have only just released it and it’s half gone already! Our Pinot has been gaining some great accolades over the last few vintages and the 2014 release is no exception (see below for reviews). We are really happy with this release. Satchy also recently had a visit to the winery from Lisa Perotti-Brown who is the online editor for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. She had this to say about us…

“One region I wish people would go out to more is the one that Bass Phillip made famous, Gippsland. Out in the middle of nowhere. There are a few little pet projects going on out there. Marcus Satchell is doing a project called Dirty Three, which is already in its early days producing some very exciting wines.”

The Vineyard

Dirty Three has some new additions to the family. No, not more children, but five alpacas. Stuart, Bob, Kevin, Rose and Scarlett were busy keeping the grass down in the vineyard over the winter, and adding some fertilizer to the vines. We love them so much, we hope to introduce more next year along with some sheep. We have now moved them into the next paddock as they would eat the new shoots on the vines. Pruning in the vineyard is finished and now that spring is here the vines are starting to shoot like crazy. Marcus and Lisa are back out on the tractor and busy keeping the vineyard under control – mowing the grass, controlling mildews and fungal diseases, shoot positioning and thinning to make sure the vines allow light on to their leaves and airflow through the canopy, so we can grow the best fruit we can.

Winery

The 2015 Pinots are all in barrel now just finished MLF (malolactic fermentation). This is where the tart malic acid is converted to the soft lactic acid, making the wines softer and more stable. 2015 was a good season both in quality and quantity and we’re looking forward to seeing some lovely Pinot go into bottle both at the end of this year and early next year. We are very excited that we have been able to source some extra Riesling and Pinot Noir from the Utingi Vineyard in Berrys Creek. The vineyard is located on the north side of Leongatha. Securing good fruit from around Gippsland is very difficult as there aren’t many vineyards with fruit for sale. John and Dave Matthews at Utingi are attention-to-detail growers and we are delighted to be developing an ongoing relationship with them. The Utingi Riesling has been blended in with our Estate fruit and we are really stoked with the 2015 wine – thankfully there is more to go around this year! It is quite likely that the Pinot will go in to a second single vineyard Pinot under the Dirty Three label next year. Exciting times indeed! Hope to see you at one of the Wine Dinners!
